About Me
Music, particularly guitar music, has always been a part of my life. The soundtrack for my childhood was the classical guitar music drifting from my dad’s bedroom where he spent hours playing the music he loved. I loved to sing so it was natural for me to take up the guitar to accompany myself. When I hit the “time to support yourself years” I got an AA degree in early childhood education and became a preschool teacher. That’s where I learned just how much fun it is to play for and sing with kids. We (Miss Peggy with her autoharp and me with my guitar) led daily music circle times and I had the opportunity to learn just what kid of music the 3 – 5 year old crowd was into. Turns out the songs Peggy and I had the most fun singing were the songs the kids liked the best. Something with a good beat, something with amusing or imaginative lyrics, bottom line something fun.
Because preschool teachers make considerably less money than they deserve I had to change careers to better support myself. I went back to school and gave up working with kids. But time went by; I became pregnant with my son and was inspired to write music for kids (my kid in particular). First I wrote lullabies (I guess born of my desire to have a baby that would sleep through the night), then I moved on to writing songs to sing to kids when they are awake. My first “non lullaby” song was Kid Courageous (see lyrics page); I had the opportunity to sing Kid Courageous at my son’s preschool. The kids responded enthusiastically and I suddenly figured out what I wanted to be when I grew up, a children’s musician. Since that time my approach to children’s music hasn’t changed at all. I write songs that I have fun singing with the hope that kids, along with the adults in their lives, will have fun singing them too. |
